How to Apply Ghillie Grass to a Camouflage Suit or Equipment

Adding Ghillie Grass to your concealment system is a great way to enhance your stealth in outdoor environments. Ghillie Grass mimics the texture of grass and foliage, helping you blend seamlessly into your surroundings. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to attach Ghillie Grass or raffia to your suit using 2.5mm cable ties.

Materials Needed:

• Camouflage suit, webbing or equipment wrapped with suitable material

• KMCS Ghillie Grass or home dyed & brushed raffia (choose colors that match your environment)

• 2.5mm cable ties (preferably in brown or natural green)

• Scissors or clippers, sharp tool for poking hole through webbing.

Step 1: Prepare the Ghillie Grass

Start by cutting it into manageable lengths, around 10–20 cm. Ghillie Grass comes perfectly coloured and pre cut into manageable lengths but you may need to cut it shorter depending on the effect you want to achieve. If you’re using natural raffia you will need to dye and brush it to thin it out before applying. Various techniques can be used to achieve this including dyes, staining with coffee or inks.

Step 2: Plan Your Placement

Decide where you want to attach the raffia. Your decision will be based on the environment you will use your suit in. For example, In a forest environment you will want to apply sparse scattering of Ghillie Grass all over your suit to create the effect of dead vegetation or twigs. Apply in more dense bunches to create a grass like effect. It may also help to focus on areas which may help break up your silhouette, such as the shoulders and back. Apply Ghillie Grass sparsely at first, test the suit in the environment you will be using it in then add more later if needed. If you feel that the Ghillie Grass has not been applied correctly for your environment it can be easily corrected, trial and error is your friend. Experiment and enjoy the process.

Step 3: Attach the Ghillie Grass

1. Take a small bundle of Ghillie Grass (5–10 strands).

2. Position it against the fabric of your camouflage suit or equipment.

3. Use a 2.5mm cable tie to secure the raffia to the suit. Thread the tie through the loop, cinch it tightly onto the fabric, and trim the excess tie.

4. Fan out the raffia to create a natural effect.

Step 4: Vary the Lengths and Colors

For a realistic look, alternate the lengths and shades of Ghillie Grass. Nature is not uniform, so avoid neat rows and bundles.

Step 5: Test and Adjust

Take your suit outside and test it in the environment you’ll be using it in. Check for unnatural patterns and gaps, and add more Ghillie Grass as necessary. Ensure all the cable ties have had their excess clipped off.

Tips for Success:

• Use Ghillie Grass sparingly to start with, avoid large dense bundles.

• Match the color of your Ghillie Grass to the predominant tones of your environment .

• Periodically check your suit for wear and replace any damaged raffia.

By following these steps, you’ll have a custom-camouflaged suit that helps you disappear into the terrain with ease. Happy crafting and stay stealthy!
